The Chronicle analyzed how the cost of living affects faculty pay.

Can Professors Afford the American Dream?:

Many faculty members feel the squeeze. We looked at the data.

The Chronicle wondered: Is the American dream still alive for faculty members?

We embarked on a project examining faculty members’ pay, and how purchasing power is affected by the cost of living, according to a county-by-county index. Our interactive tool shows how pay stacks up across faculty rank, county, state, and peer institutions. ...

There’s no single answer to the question of whether the American dream is still alive for faculty members, but here are a few top findings from our analysis, which is drawn from salary and institution data from the Department of Education’s Integrated Postsecondary Education Data Survey for the 2022-23 academic year and combined with the Council for Community and Economic Research’s Cost of Living Index from May of this year.

How Professors Make Ends Meet:

Seven faculty members describe their personal finances.

How Far Does Your Pay Go?:

Methodology

Salary and institutional data come from the Department of Education’s Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System for the 2022-23 academic year.
