Georgetown Law Grad Sues Foley & Lardner For Rescinding Job Offer Due To Her Pro-Palestine Views

Foley & Lardner is being sued for scrapping a recent law school graduate’s job offer over her comments about the Israel-Hamas war.

Jinan Chehade said in a complaint filed Wednesday that Foley discriminated against her because of her Arab Muslim background. The firm revoked her offer in October, one day before she was set to start as a first-year associate in Foley’s Chicago office, according to the complaint.

The move came after Foley officials “interrogated” Chehade about her social media posts and public remarks at Chicago’s city hall in support of Palestine, she said. That includes her statement in the city hall speech that the Oct. 7 Hamas attack on Israel “was not ‘unprovoked,’” but instead the “natural result of 75 years of occupation and violence by Israeli forces.” ...

Foley believes Chehade’s suit is “without merit,” a spokesperson said Wednesday.

“Foley is led by our core values, which seek to foster an environment where people feel included, safe, and supported,” the spokesperson said. “We stand behind our decision to rescind Ms. Chehade’s employment offer as a result of the statements she made surrounding the horrendous attacks by Hamas on October 7. There is no room for condoning violence, hatred, bigotry, or any form of discrimination.” ...

"Foley did not terminate the employment of Foley attorneys who openly supported Israeli violence against Palestinians,” according to the complaint. “Unlike Chehade, they were not expressing Arab identity or solidarity and did not associate with Palestinians.”
