The Coming Spike In Law School Applications

Following up on my recent posts:

Law.com, With Release of LSAT Scores Today, Law School Applications Expected to Spike:

November’s Law School Admissions Test scores were released as scheduled at 9 a.m. ET this morning. And while analysis of the scores likely won’t be available for a few days, according to a Law School Admission Council (LSAC) spokesperson, the expectation is that the already sky-high number of law school applicants and applications in the U.S. will rise even further.

“We’ll likely see law school applications go back up at least initially,” the LSAC spokesperson told Law.com on Wednesday. “If someone got a really good score, then they are going to apply.”

As of Nov. 29, U.S. law school applicant and application data showed declines for the 2021-22 enrollment year, but those numbers are somewhat misleading.

The LSAC spokesperson said 24,900 test takers took the exam in November. Test-takers have until Friday, Dec. 3, at 11:59 p.m. ET to cancel their scores, and if they choose, they can register to retake the LSAT in January.

LSAC reported that, as of Nov. 29, there had been 150,378 applications submitted by 23,042 applicants for the 2022 school year.

A year ago at this time, there had been 155,903 applications submitted by 24,233 applicants.

But last year saw an enormous boom in the number of applicants and applications to law school amid the pandemic. So while the most recent figures show a 4.9% year-over-year decline in applicants and a 3.5% decline in applications, it’s not necessarily a sign that the longer-term trend of increasing interest in law school is waning.

When comparing the numbers to two years ago, this year’s data shows a significant increase: There were 101,155 applications two years ago, so this year’s 150,378 applications marks a 48.7% increase. Likewise, two years ago there were 18,200 applicants, so 23,042 applicants this year is a 26.6% increase, according to LSAC’s Nov. 29 report.
