79% Of Faculty Vote To Strip Robert E. Lee's Name From Washington & Lee University

Following up on my earlier posts:

Richmond Times-Dispatch, Washington and Lee Faculty Vote to Change the University's Name:

Washington & Lee (2020)Washington and Lee University faculty passed a motion to remove Robert E. Lee from the name of the small liberal arts college in Lexington.

The motion — the first time for W&L faculty to make such a recommendation — will be sent to the board of trustees.

W&L President Will Dudley called a special meeting to discuss the motion at the request of the faculty affairs committee. More than 260 faculty members attended the virtual meeting late Monday afternoon and 79% of them voted for the motion.

“The university’s name rests with its board of trustees, and there are no current plans to change it,” said university spokeswoman Drewry Sackett.

Lee was against slavery.

You do realize that actions like this make it less likely that the next civil war will not be ended with “malice toward none, with charity for all.”

Also, Lee was a Dem. Awfully curious that we’re erasing Dem history so much.

Washington was a slave owner. Does this mean that his name will also be dropped so the university's name will be "and University" or maybe "The University Formerly Known as Washington and Lee" ?

Yale's days are numbered.

What always fascinating to me about these thoughtful deliberations and deeply held convictions about expunging all symbols of racism from American society is, why they all seem to happen suddenly, after certain high-profile events.

As if these institutions haven't been left of center for decades with Lee's and Wilson's and other nefarious names on their colleges and schools.

It's almost as if they're embarrassed all of the sudden?

Congress should pass a law reviving whatever federal statute of limitations may apply to the Democratic Party's historical violation of black civil rights. That'll bankrupt them. And shut them up real quick.

@MM: Forget “high-profile events.” It’s every presidential election year. They need to whip up the black vote like clockwork.

If Republicans consistently take but a mere ~20% of the black vote, Dems will never win another election. Puts their predicament in perspective and explains why they pull out all the stops to keep the plantation going.

It will be interesting to see what the alumni say.

"Lee was a Dem. Awfully curious that we’re erasing Dem history so much."

Turn off the Fox News, read a book, and then report back on why this is a stupid argument. I can wait...

It's fascinating. Some years ago one of the best prep schools in New England, Governor Dummer Academy, changed its name to Governor's Academy. They did so because apparently some people thought it sounded like "dumber." A few alumni were bothered by the change, but absolutely no one said that taking William Dummer's name off the school was erasing history. Dummer was both a colonial governor of Massachusetts and, through his will, the founder/funder of Governor Dummer Academy.

Now I think most Taxprof readers, if not commenters, will agree that removing someone's name because it kinda sounds like "dumber" is, ahem, dumber than removing someone's name because he committed treason in defense of slavery. And yet that met with very minimal resistance. Just some perspective.
