Female Economists Report Rampant Sexual Harassment And Gender Discrimination

A new survey and accompanying letter from the American Economic Association reveal rampant sexual harassment and gender and racial discrimination in the economics profession.

In a field that is only interested in things they can quantify, this is not especially surprising

These reports are discouraging for two reasons. First, women should not be harassed for being women. Second, the reports tempt people making hiring decisions to disfavor women illegally because of potential harassment claims. This second factor increases every time a false complaint is publicized. People who selfishly make false claims need to grow a conscience.

A bit ironic since it is a basic conclusion of economics that discrimination of any kind in the workplace is inefficient!
