Auditing of Large Partnerships
Monte Jackel, Jackel Tax Law
The GAO recently issued a report on the audit of large partnerships. There was also a panel discussion on the topic at the most recent University of Chicago Tax Institute. The GAO report concludes that the audit rate is very low. But that is not really where the problem is. Monte Jackel, who has spent decades working on partnership issues on behalf of the government and the IRS, will address the significance of the developing IRS approach to auditing partnership returns
Lifecycle of a Tax Court Case
Michael Raiken, IRS Chief Counsel
Every taxpayer that is audited believes that they are targeted or that somehow they triggered a review of their return. Michael Raiken will discuss the lifecycle of a Tax Court case, including from selecting the return for examination, the different examination avenues, and how the case ends up before that Tax Court for trial. Throughout his discussion, Michael will explain how a case can be resolved, both prior to the issuance of a Notice of Deficiency and, once the Notice of Deficiency has been issued, without the need for trial.
