Another Law Prof Dying of ALS

Folowing up on Sunday's post on Steven Gey (Florida State):  Today's Faculty Lounge has a moving post about Michael Goldsmith (BYU), who also is dying of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS -- Lou Gehrig's disease).  Michael wrote about his plight in Newsweek last November, and the New York Times picked up the story, as well as other media outlets.

Paul's posting yesterday entitled, "Another Law Prof Dying of ALS" (See below), hit me like a ton of bricks when I opened it and saw who it was about. Most of you probably do not know Michael (or "Mickey" as I have always thought of him) because we are not in the same field of law, but I have fond memories of knowing him when we were both college students, and ending up as law profs was probably the furthest thing from our minds. Mickey attended to Cornell, and I attended The University of Vermont (UVM), but Mickey's girlfriend at the time also attended UVM and lived downstairs from me. Almost every weekend (at least it seems like every weekend :-)), Mickey would schlep himself up through the snows of the northeast from Ithaca to Burlington to visit his girlfriend and we all spent a significant amount of time getting to know each other. A nicer and kinder guy than Mickey there is not.

Of course, once I read Paul's posting, I e-mailed Mickey, and we have exchanged several e-mails since, despite the fact that he wrote that he does find it difficult to type for very long now. In his most recent e-mail, he asked that I let all of you know that he is "down but not out", so I have taken the liberty of forwarding to all of you the e-mail he sent me. (Mickey, I hope you don't mind! :-)). As you can see, I have also copied him on this message to all of you.

Myron, Thanks for the link. Would you mind postiing a comment saying

that you have heard from me and that, while I do have ALS, reports of my

imminent demise are hopefully exaggerated. I'm down but not out and

still very much in the game. For instance, my students voted me best

teacher for the 3rd yr. in a row and the 6th time in my career. This

disease will eventually get me but I intend to go down swinging. best,

m
