Tax Analysts and TRAC Issue First of Monthly Series of Tax Enforcement Reports

Tax Analysts and the Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse of Syracuse University have joined forces to offer a new series of monthly reports on a range of tax enforcement subjects, beginning with the use of the government's criminal powers. Forthcoming monthly reports will focus on tax audits, tax collections, and other related issues.

This month's report on Tax Evasion Prosecutions for Fiscal Year 2007 finds 196 new tax evasion prosecutions.  In comparison with prior periods, the number of 2007 tax evasion prosecutions is:

  • Down 5.3% from last year
  • Down 8.4% from five years ago
  • Down 49.4% from ten years ago
  • Down 68.7% from twenty years ago

The judicial districts with the most tax evasion prosecutions were:

  • 1.  Southern District of Ohio:  12
  • 2.  Central District of California:  11
  • 3.  Northern District of California:  10
  • 4.  Northern District of Texas:  10
  • 5.  New Jersey:  9
  • 6.  Connecticut:  7
  •       Northern District of Ohio:  7
  •       Western District of Pennsylvania:  7
  • 9.  Northern District of California:  6
  •       Nevada:  6
