Taxpayer sometimes believe that they can blow off the filing deadline if they are simply filing a return that will show an overpayment. That's poor thinking as Professor Les Book explains over at Procedurally Taxing blog. See “I Thought I Was Getting a Refund” is An Inadequate Excuse for Late Filing"
This excellent blog reviews a Tax Court case last week where the taxpayer got in heaps of trouble for failing to file returns. The taxpayer's excuse was that he had way overpaid his tax liabilities and so thought he could just put off filing without penalty. Taxpayer (literally) miscalculated. Don't let that happen to you or your clients!
