I doubt this was a home invasion/stranger killing. Sounds like somebody rang the doorbell, shot him, and fled.

Unless Lt. Daniels has some inside information, many home invasion killings happen at the front door. If the robber tries to force his way in with a gun and the victim tries to block the invader's way, perhaps because his family is inside the house, that's where the shooting occurs.

Don't just open your door! I do it myself too often, but I take at least a glance through the peep and I always have at least a knife on me. If it is someone suspicious I'll talk to them through the door and a few times I've said "wait a minute" before retrieving my pocket-holstered 5-shot J-frame and dropping it into my pocket.

I live in a very safe neighborhood, except for one thing. It is two miles from a black enclave that used to be the "murder capital" of the United States, and bad guys LIKE good neighborhoods. That's where the plump victims are, so if you are a person who would stand in front of your family you had damned well better have a gun, and it needs to be on you at the time.
