Diversity in the Legal Profession, 2013

NALP New LogoNALP, Representation of Women Associates Falls for Fourth Straight Year as Minority Associates Continue to Make Gains -- Women and Minority Partners Continue to Make Small Gains:

According to the latest law firm demographic findings from NALP, women and minority partners continued to make small gains in their representation among law firm partners as a whole in 2013, and the percentage of minority associates has rebounded for the third year in a row after falling in the wake of the recession. However, the percentage of women associates has eroded every year since 2010. The net result is very small net gains in the representation of women and minority lawyers overall.

Imagine if the NALP had been as forthcoming/concerned about *everybody's* outcome back in 1995 - we might have a less economically deranged profession.

And, note, even when it comes to the NALP's pet focus, the use of percentages (rather than absolute numbers - and overall JD #'s for context) leaves a *lot* of info out of the debate.

What this story leaves out is the definition of "minority." Half the minority lawyers are Asian-American, according to a recent survey published online by Vault Career Intelligence, which also notes that the number of African-American summer associates and entry-level hires at surveyed firms is declining.

Where are the disabled minorities? We have the highest rate of poverty at 28% in the U.S. but employers have no regard for the disenfranchised. NALP collects data on the employment of disabled attorneys. Our employment rate (in the private sector at least) is just above 0%. This indicates that NALP is gathering the data but it also shows that employers have little to no regard for hiring disabled persons. Why is there so much emphasis on hiring women (who may be members of the middle and/or upper classes) but none on hiring the disabled (who face rampant employment discrimination which leads to the aforementioned 28% poverty rate).
