I highly recommend reading the 2013 Tax Market Assessment published by TaxTalent with regards to the 2013 job market for tax professionals. These reports date back to 2007.

Note that the data set doesn't include accounting firms, which are a big part of the market. "fn3: Thomson Reuters Peer Monitor data ... are based on reported results from 130 law firms, including 50 AmLaw 100 firms, 45 Am Law 2nd 100 firms, and 35 additional firms." While 2012 may have been weaker overall than 2011 in tax, the fourth quarter was better than the rest of the year. (useful when reading the tea leaves for 2013.) There was an increase in tax work if you compare just Q4 2011 to Q4 2012 (likely driven by Q4 M & A volume). https://peermonitor.thomsonreuters.com/ThomsonPeer/docs/PMI_2012_Q4.pdf
