SAT Scores Continue to Fall, Especially Among Minority Groups

Wall Street Journal, SAT Reading, Writing Scores Hit Low:

SAT scores for the high-school graduating class of 2011 fell in all three subject areas, and the average reading and writing scores were the lowest ever recorded, according to data released on Wednesday.

The data also show continuation of a trend that has concerned many educators for years: growing gaps by race and ethnicity in how students perform on average on the test.

Could one reason for this simply be that more people are taking the test, who, had they been in a comparable position in the 70s, would never have even taken the test? Put another way, are the top 20,000 students faring worse overall?

This proves that, to raise the scores, we need to raise taxes to send more money to the teacher unions! At least, that's the talking point that they push.
