30 College Presidents Made $1 Million in 2008

Following up on my previous post, 100 Colleges Charge $50k/Year -- Up from 58 in 2009-10 and 5 in 2008-09: 30 college presidents earned more than $1 million in compensation in 2008 (up from 23 in 2007), topped by Touro President Bernard Lander's $4,786,830 compensation. (Hat Tip: Ann Murphy.)

You know, I'd really be interested in the lowest paid university presidents [perhaps divided by Carnegie status or some such] and would like to know how they and their schools are doing.

I've seen 3 Uni presidents and 2 interims at my school in the past decade, with ever-increasing compensation packages and I see pretty much zero impact by any of them. [Oh, and even at a mid-level state uni, the compensation of our pres, all-inclusive, approaches 800K.]

What is fair compensation? If you are getting a million it is fair, or too low. If you are paying a million it is fair, or too high. It is always claimed by executives that it is the market that determines their compensation, if they are happy with it. The fact that the compensation is often decided by compliant boards with little reason or will to say no undercuts the idea that the free market is at work. Especially when historically bad execs have been paid handsome salaries for running their institutions off the tracks. One gets the feeling that there is a good old boys network at work that takes care of its own often times at the expense of lower level employees who see little or no movement in their own compensation.
