IRS Issues New Tax Return Preparer Rules

The IRS yesterday proposed new registration, testing and continuing education requirements for tax return preparers:

  • Return Preparer Review (55 pages)
  • IR-2010-1
  • FS-2010-1, Return Preparer Review Leads to Recommendations For New Requirements of Paid Tax Return Preparers
  • FS-2010-2, Tax Filing Season 2010: Efforts Increase to Ensure Accurate Return Preparation

The government uses a sledge hammer when it should have used a tack hammer - go figure.

The new regulations will be paid for by a "modest" fee on tax preparers, Shulman said. Given the agency collects about $2.5 trillion a year in taxes, even small improvements amount to big dollars.

Just what I want, another fee (tax)on my income. Still, it might shake out the riff-raff and ribbon clerks.
