Economic Squeeze to Hit Faculty Hiring?

A hiring freeze at William & Mary has sparked a blogosphere discussion on the impact of the economic downturn on law faculty hiring.  The consensus:  fewer retirements and fewer slots to fill.

Well it's really a triple whammy because

i. law schools will have less money

ii. it will be harder to "buy out" older faculty with tiaa cref down, and

iii. the competition for remaining spots will be fiercer because of people leaving law firms that are even worse hit than we are

The good news: better students as they flee business schools following the latest Wall Street crash.
