As a parent of 2 WU graduates, I must agree with the posting asking for WU to withdraw the honorary degree to Phyllis Schlafly.

My daughter will be freshman in the fall. I respect Wash U.'s right to choose a commencement speaker who represents a conservative view. However, Schlafly's comments about marital rape, gay people, mothers in the work force and general statements about women's role in our culture have been hateful, divisive and hypocritical considering the choices she has made in her life. I am disappointed at Wash U. for this choice and support the students and faculty who are protesting. Comparing her as a controversial speaker with Jessie Jackson is inappropriate. Jackson does not make hateful statements; he raises questions, sometimes uncomfortable ones, about issues in our culture. Schlafly denigrates an important movement in this country that has in many ways become part of our culture.

One commenter to this post explained some reasons why she disagrees with Schlafly. Apparently Schlafly's points of view are "hateful, divisive and hypocritical."

They are hateful because they are different, divisive because they disagree, and hypocritical because...? Well. I am comforted by the courage of the Left, who brave this new world of tolerance with anything but.
