IRS e-File and Free-File Open Tomorrow for Non-AMT Taxpayers
The IRS announced today (IR-2008-5) that non-AMT taxpayers can begin e-filing their tax returns tomorrow (January 11). Last year, 80 million tax returns (57% of the total returns) were filed electronically. Taxpayers affected by the recent AMT legislation can begin e-filing their returns February 11.
The IRS also announced today (IR-2008-6) that the IRS and its 19 private-sector partners will open its Free File program tomorrow. The program provides free tax preparation and electronic filing services to taxpayers with AGI of $54,000 or less (seven out of ten taxpayers (97 million filers)).
