Obama Announces Five-Part Tax Plan

Democratic Presidential candidate Barack Obama unveiled his five-part Tax Fairness for the Middle Class plan in a speech today in Washington, D.C.:

Barack Obama will stand up to the special interests and restore fairness to the tax code. Obama’s tax fairness plan will reward work and provided needed tax cuts to America’s workers. His five-part plan will provide a tax cut to over 150 million workers and their families. Obama will:

    1. Create a new “Making Work Pay” tax credit of up to $1,000 for America’s working families
    2. Create a new universal mortgage interest credit that will benefit low and middle-income homeowners
    3. Honor America’s seniors by eliminating income taxes for those making less than $50,000 per year
    4. Simplify tax filings so millions of Americans can do their taxes in less than 5 minutes
    5. Eliminate special interest loopholes and tax breaks and crack down on international tax havens

I'll start caring about Obama when Obama starts to seriously consider repealing the Alternative Minimum Tax? As a middle class professional, the AMT is a good reason for me to avoid doing more and earning more than I already do.

I question the tax breaks for seniors making over 50k a year. We have to remember that there are several seniors who are millionaires living off of pensions and dividend streams that might be a source of lost revenue. We also have to remember that seniors live longer, and tend to work longer...

As to making our return process simpler, the only way that will ever work is if we adopt a flat-tax. Period...

Does he realize that he will be destroying the tax cut by raising capital gains? Not only will the market react poorly, losing capital appreciation, but gains will also be less.

Obama seems to be archaic in his tax cut proposal. A one thousand dollar credit isn't going to help the middle class in any meanginful way.

I do like the elderly tax cut for individuals earning less than 50K.

How about combining the income and FICA taxes and subjecting income over X% of the poverty level to a flat tax? I do like the 5 minute tax return suggestion, all your income are belong to us, nuff said.
