Death of John Gaubatz
Following up on Friday's post on the death of Miami Tax Prof John T. Gaubatz at age 65: see his obituary from the Miami Herald:.
Born April 21, 1942, in Denver, Gaubatz graduated from Colorado State University in 1964 with a bachelor's in physics and earned his law degree from the University of Chicago in 1967. The next year, Gaubatz married Kathy Dall. ''We loved each other until the second I kissed him goodbye,'' Kathy Gaubatz said. The couple's only son, Daniel, died unexpectedly, in his sleep 12 years ago. Kathy said that after her son's death, Gaubatz became a surrogate father to some young men who had rocky relationships with their own fathers or whose fathers had passed away. ''John was a giant in his heart, as well as in his profession,'' she said.

Comments
I attended University of Miami's LL.M. program in estate planning during the 1996-97 school year. Prof. Gaubatz taught us an estate-planning overview course during the first semester. In the second week, he used the experience of his son's death as a basis for discussing estate administration. It is likely the most memorable hour of classroom instruction I've ever experienced--certainly, the most poignant. My biggest regret about that year was that Prof. Gaubatz taught us only one course. He was a truly fine man.
