Brookings Hosts Forum on Reforming Taxation in the Global Age Today at Georgetown
The Hamilton Project at the Brookings Institution hosts a two-part forum today at Georgetown on Reforming Taxation in the Global Age:
Former U.S. Treasury Secretary Lawrence H. Summers will open the discussion by providing an overview of a new Hamilton Project strategy paper that frames the challenges facing the current U.S. system of taxation and offers six guiding principles for progressively reforming the tax code.
Jason Furman, Brookings senior fellow and Hamilton Project director, will moderate the first panel discussion of three new Hamilton Project discussion papers:
- Lily L. Batchelder (NYU) will discuss her proposal to replace the current estate tax system with an inheritance tax.
- Kimberly Clausing (Reed College) and Reuven S. Avi-Yonah (Michigan) will propose a bold reform to the U.S. system of international corporate taxation by adopting a system of formulary apportionment.
- Edward Kleinbard (Cleary Gottlieb) will present a proposal for a systematic rehabilitation of the business income tax.
Alan Murray of the Wall Street Journal will moderate the second panel discussion of ways of improving the U.S. tax system:
- Former U.S. Treasury Secretaries and Hamilton Project Advisory Council members Robert E. Rubin and Summers
- William G. Gale (Tax Policy Center Co-Director)
- Jason Furman (Director of the Hamilton Project)
- John L. Buckley (Senior Tax Counsel, House Ways & Means Committee (Majority Staff))
- Mark Prater (Deputy Staff Director and Chief Tax Counsel, Senate Finance Committee (Minority Staff))
- Former Assistant Treasury Secretaries for Tax Policy Pamela Olson and Jonathan Talisman
The forum is 9:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. today at the Georgetown Law Center, The Gewirz Student Center, 12th Floor, 120 F Street, N.W., Washington, D.C. To RSVP, register online. A webcast of the forum is available here.
