Boalt Hall to Forgive $100k in Student Loans for Graduates Who Earn < $58k in Public Service or Government Jobs

Boalt_1The University of California-Berkeley’s Boalt Hall School of Law is offering to forgive student loans of up to $100,000 for graduates who go into public-service or government jobs that pay less than $58,000 a year.   From Dean Christopher Edley, Jr.:

This loan repayment assistance program gives Boalt "the most generous loan forgiveness program of any leading law school, with the possible exception of Yale (which we don't really count, because they have enough money to be admitted to the G-8)."

For details, see here.  (Hat tip:  Chronicle of Higher Education.)

Update:  Forgiveness of student loans does not give rise to discharge of indebtedness income under § 108(f)(1):  "In general In the case of an individual, gross income does not include any amount which (but for this subsection) would be includible in gross income by reason of the discharge (in whole or in part) of any student loan if such discharge was pursuant to a provision of such loan under which all or part of the indebtedness of the individual would be discharged if the individual worked for a certain period of time in certain professions for any of a broad class of employers."
