Do Professors Believe in God?
Neil Gross (Harvard University, Sociology Department) & Solon Simmons (George Mason University, Sociology Department) have posted How Religious Are America's College and University Professors? on the Harvard web site. This morning's Inside Higher Ed has a detailed article on the paper, Not So Godless After All, by Scott Jaschik, with this great chart:
The study also ranks belief in God among academic disciplines. The disciplines with the highest percentage of atheists and agnostics are:
- Biology
- Psychology
- Computer Science
- Economics
- Mechanical Engineering
- Political Science
In contrast, the disciplines with the highest percentage of professors who "have no dount that God exists":
- Accounting (63.0%)
- Elementary Education (56.8%)
- Finance (48.6%
- Marketing (46.5%)
- Art (46.2%)
- Criminal Justice (46.2%)
The survey excluded law professors.
