IRS Downsizes Work Force as Result of Technology and Competitive Bidding

Two recent articles in The Washington Post (here and here) report on job losses at the IRS due to changes in technology. 215 technology employees who provide hardware and software services to support tax return processing will lose their jobs at 10 service centers. 270 employees who work at distribution centers will lose their jobs as the IRS closes two centers in light of decreasing demand for hard copies of tax forms and publications because of their ready availability on the Internet. In both cases, IRS employees beat back bids from private-sector vendors but paid a price -- in jobs -- to keep the work in-house.
