Today is "Cost of Government Day"

Wednesday, July 7, 2004

Americans for Tax Reform has announced that today (July 7) is "Cost of Government Day," the day on which the average American has earned enough in cumulative gross income to pay for their share of government spending (total federal, state, and local), plus the cost of regulation. For the complete 12-page report, see here. The Washington Post's story is here.

I think they should do it the other way around - just to emphasize the pain involved: state the date AFTER which you are paying the government until the end of the year. So, for example, after June 24th, until the end of the year, every cent you make goes to the government. This could be brought up frequently during that whole period to remind people that they are in the middle of paying for govt and will continue to do so till the end of the year. The way it is now, nobody pays attention until they hear that they just paid, not that they are now or will have to continue to pay.
